How to Turn a Hobby into a Successful Business

When thinking about turning a hobby into a business, it must be something you are passionate about. If you are lukewarm about it, the business is destined to fail.  When you are passionate about your craft, you are more likely to continually strive to produce the best product or service.  In most cases, this means that you will have to deepen your expertise in your craft by learning and practicing consistently.  Workshops, classes, and mentorships will be great resources to make sure that you are competitive in your business market.  

Here’s a guide to help you get started with turning your hobby into a profitable business:

1. Business Plan

Before you go any further, you must create a solid business plan.  Your business plan is a roadmap for the business by stating the goals, strategies, and funding plan.  The business plan is going to define your product or service, target market, and competitive advantages and disadvantages.  Also, it will be incredibly beneficial to research your business market by starting the benchmarking process.  In other words, you will compare your business with comparable businesses in your market with your business.  Although your business is new, you will want to know if your business plan needs to be modified to keep up with the competition and eventually outpace the competition.  While you are researching your market of comparable businesses, you should include the top three performing businesses in your market and look into their business practices as examples to emulate.  This process will help you understand your market and find any gaps in the market that your business will be able to fill.  You will gain a better understanding of your target customer base, also.

2. Legal and Financial Aspects

Next, you must address the legal and financial aspects of the business setup process.  First, you must obtain a business license and/or permits. Next, you must set up your tax remittance account with your state revenue department, if you are selling products that require the collection of sales tax.  You will need to look into the applicable tax remittances that will be required for your business in your state.  Don’t forget to set up a business bank account for accounting purposes.  In most cases, you will need an Employee Identification Number (EIN) to set up a bank account.  You can get an EIN even if you do not have employees.  An EIN is free and can be set up on the Internal Revenue Service website (irs.gov).

3. Branding and Marketing

To start your marketing strategy, you need to first develop your brand identity by creating your logo to be placed on all of your marketing materials such as business cards, letterhead, email templates, and social media platforms.  You will need to develop a marketing strategy that will include your unique selling proposition that will make your product or service stand out from the competition and resonate with your customers.   In today’s digital age, having a strong online presence is crucial.  A website or online store is a must-have. You will need to promote your products or services by using social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest to promote your work and engage with your target market.  In addition to social media, you can market and collaborate with other artists at art fairs, exhibitions, and networking events. Collaborations with other artists or businesses will help you to reach a wider audience and gain exposure for your craft or service.

4. Streamline Work 

As a business owner, efficiency matters.  As your business grows, you may have to streamline some of your processes.  Establish a workflow that allows consistent craft creations or services without compromising quality. Outsourcing tasks like printing or packaging to focus on growth is an excellent idea.

5. Customer Service

In addition to having an exceptional product or service, your customer service quality must be outstanding.  You should respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely and professional manner.  Great customer service could lead to repeat sales opportunities.
